How to Read an Electrical Bill of Materials (BOM)
If you've ever had a supplier quote come back and not match what you expected, the disconnect usually traces back to how the BOM was built, not the pricing itself. A Bill of Materials is really just a translation of the drawings into a shopping list, but a good one tells you a lot more than "what to buy."
Start with the line-item structure. Every BOM should break items out by category, not just dump everything into one list — devices and wiring devices, fixtures, gear (panels, disconnects, transformers), conduit and fittings, and wire and cable should each be their own section. If a BOM you're handed lumps everything together, that's usually a sign it was built fast and not double-checked against the drawings room by room.
Next, check quantities against unit of measure. Conduit and wire are typically listed in linear feet, but fittings, boxes, and devices are counted individually — a mismatch here (like wire quantities that don't account for waste factor, or fittings that don't match the conduit count) is one of the most common places estimates go sideways after the bid is won.
Third, look for what's tied to the drawings versus what's assumed. A defensible BOM should be traceable line by line back to a specific sheet, room, or circuit — that's what protects you if a GC or client questions a number later. If a BOM can't answer "where did this quantity come from," it's a guess, not a takeoff.
Finally, check for exclusions and clarifications. Every solid proposal package should spell out what's not included (permits, fees, temporary power, low-voltage unless specified) as clearly as what is. That's not paperwork for its own sake — it's what keeps a change order conversation from turning into a dispute.
A BOM you can trust is one you could hand to a second estimator and have them arrive at the same numbers. That's the standard we build every takeoff to.
Why Speed Wins
Bid More, Win More — 5 Ways Faster Estimates Actually Win You More Work
Turnaround time gets treated like a convenience feature, but for electrical contractors it's closer to a competitive weapon. Here's why speed changes outcomes, not just schedules.
First, faster estimates mean you can bid more jobs in the same window. If a typical hard bid takes your team three to five days internally, you're capped at a handful of live bids at once. Cut that to 24–48 hours and the math changes — the same crew capacity now covers two or three times the bid volume, which directly increases your odds of winning something in any given week.
Second, speed lets you bid the jobs that come in late. GCs routinely send out ITBs with tight turnarounds, and a lot of qualified subs simply can't respond in time and self-select out. Being the sub who can turn around a number on short notice puts you in rooms your competitors never even see.
Third, it protects your margin conversations. When you're rushed, corners get cut on takeoff accuracy, and that shows up later as change orders you have to negotiate defensively instead of estimate accuracy you can stand behind. A fast process built for speed from the start (rather than compressed under deadline pressure) protects both your bid number and your credibility when it's time to true up actual costs.
Fourth, it frees your estimator to do the highest-value part of the job: reviewing scope and pricing strategy, not manually counting devices on a drawing set. Outsourcing or systematizing the mechanical parts of takeoff means the person setting your price is spending their time on judgment calls, not data entry.
Fifth — and this is the one people underestimate — responsiveness itself is a trust signal to GCs. A sub who turns around a clean, accurate number fast, bid after bid, becomes the sub a GC calls first next time, before the ITB even goes out to anyone else.
None of this works if speed comes at the cost of accuracy — that's the whole reason we built our process around a fixed 24–48 hour window with quantities tied line-by-line back to the drawings, not shortcuts.
What Clients Say
Trusted by Contractors
Straight from the people who bid the work — a general contractor and an electrical contractor — on why our estimates hold up in the field.
“
24Seventeen Estimating Services has truly been an amazing addition to my company. Their precision estimating always reflects the utmost professionalism on takeoffs, proposals, accuracy and absolute speedy turnaround. Whenever I need a proposal completed quickly, I know I can count on them to deliver. Highly recommend anyone whose business is in need of top-tier estimating services. I did it for years and years on my own, and this has definitely elevated the status of my company and frees me up to concentrate on other aspects of the business.
Neil GodfreyGodfrey Electric · Electrical Contractor
“
24seventeen has been an excellent resource for electrical estimating support when we need it as a general contractor. While we often have strong subcontractor coverage and reliable pricing, there are times—particularly in remote locations or on design-build projects—when we cannot obtain electrical quotes we can confidently rely on.
In those situations, 24seventeen has proven invaluable. Unlike many low-cost estimating services that simply perform takeoffs and rely on software outputs, the estimators at 24seventeen bring real-world electrical estimating and field experience. Their practical knowledge allows them to deliver estimates that are both reliable and constructible.
With all of their real-world experience, they also excel at design-build estimates where there may be little to no electrical detail — they can take a floor-plan-only set with no electrical information and develop a good cost basis for the project utilizing their knowledge and experience. This is something that a “take-off service” cannot even attempt. This is a great tool for general contractors bidding design-build projects.
When we receive an estimate from 24seventeen, we are confident that it reflects a realistic project cost and that we can secure a qualified electrical subcontractor to perform the work within that budget. Their estimates help reduce risk and give us greater confidence when bidding projects with limited electrical subcontractor coverage.
They also provide quick turnaround times when urgent estimates are needed. In addition, we have recommended 24seventeen to several electrical subcontractors, who have successfully used the service as overflow estimating support during busy periods.
We highly recommend 24seventeen for electrical estimating services.

FAQ
Common Questions
How much does an estimate cost?
Pricing scales with project size, scope, and the deliverable you need. The fastest way to see your number is the live fee calculator on the Pricing page — it itemizes takeoff, bid pricing, bundle discounts, and any rush premium in real time. Send your drawings and we'll confirm a firm quote.
What file formats do you accept?
PDF plan sets work best. We also handle common drawing and specification formats — attach them to your request or share a cloud link, and we'll take it from there.
How fast is turnaround?
Typically 24–48 hours from the time we receive a complete drawing set. Working against a tight bid deadline? Ask about rush turnaround when you submit.
Do you work outside Florida?
Yes. We're Florida-built and estimate for contractors nationwide, with active work across multiple states. Your location doesn't change our turnaround.
Is my bid information kept confidential?
Always. Your drawings, scope, and pricing are handled confidentially and never shared. The sample deliverables shown on this site are deliberately redacted to protect client information.
What types of estimates do you provide?
Hard bids, Bill of Materials (BOM), proposal-only, and complete estimate packages — for both residential and commercial electrical work.
Opens Microsoft Teams — works best if you have the Teams app or a Microsoft account.
